Candice was studying to become a registered nurse when circumstances led to her experiencing homelessness. She endured many hardships while living on the streets, surviving domestic violence and gang violence.
When Los Angeles County conducted its first RV-focused Pathway Home encampment resolution in East Gardena, Candice signed up for interim housing operated by the nonprofit service provider, St. Joseph Center.
Within 90 days, she was able to move into permanent housing at Firestone Apartments, which the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) is master leasing in part with funding provided by LA County’s largest local Medi-Cal managed care health plans, L.A. Care Health Plan and Health Net, through the Housing and Homelessness Incentive Program, aimed at increasing the supply of affordable housing countywide.
Candice is determined to get her life back on track. She plans to go back to nursing school and open a nonprofit for battered women.
