Los Angeles County’s Pathway Home program brought 33 people experiencing homelessness off the streets of Compton and into safe interim housing, where they will receive supportive services and other resources that will enable them transition out of homelessness and into permanent housing.

“LA County continues to make significant progress in helping people move from unhealthy and unsafe conditions on the street and finding them housing and supportive services,” LA County Supervisor Holly Mitchell said. “These comprehensive efforts under Pathway Home help break the cycle of homelessness by putting our neighbors onto a journey toward permanent housing and stability.”

(Mayra Beltran Vasquez / Los Angeles County)The LA County Homeless Initiative collaborated with the Office of LA County Supervisor Holly Mitchell and the City of Compton in conducting the Pathway Home operation on January 9th. The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) and the nonprofit service provider HOPICS were essential to bringing unsheltered residents indoors, as they had built trusting relationships with them by providing engagement and support during their unhoused experience. HOPICS will continue to work with them at the interim housing location, a motel.

The LA County Chief Executive Office and the LA County Departments of Health Services, Mental Health, Public Health, Sheriff’s, Public Works, and Animal Care and Control were also critical partners, along with the Army Corps of Engineers.

“The Board of Supervisors’ emergency declaration enables us to fast-track and scale up the efforts we know are effective in ending homelessness,” LA County Homeless Initiative Director Cheri Todoroff said. “Pathway Home is part of an urgent mobilization with our local jurisdiction partners that reflects an all-hands-on deck approach to bringing our unhoused neighbors indoors.”

Pathway Home is an LA County Homeless Initiative-led encampment resolution program that is a critical component of the County’s comprehensive response to the local emergency on homelessness adopted by the Board of Supervisors in 2023. By leveraging emergency powers and partnerships with local jurisdictions, Pathway Home is a full-circle solution that brings people off the streets into immediately available interim housing accompanied by a comprehensive suite of supportive services and, ultimately, into safe, permanent homes.

During a Pathway Home encampment resolution operation in Compton, January 9, 2024, James Woods transitioned from his encampment to a motel serving as an interim housing location.
