For many years Janie worked as an advocate for people experiencing homelessness. When her partner left her unexpectedly, she found herself unable to pay the bills on her own and fell into homelessness herself during the COVID pandemic.

Janie spent months living in her car until outreach teams deployed to identify vulnerable people experiencing homelessness during the pandemic helped her move into LA County’s Hilda L. Solis First Care Village, operated by the Weingart Center. Located in downtown Los Angeles, it was originally supposed to be a parking lot for Men’s Central Jail until the Board of Supervisors voted to build interim housing there instead.

While living at the Hilda L. Solis Care First Village, Janie was provided with wraparound services and meals. She is forever thankful for the treatment, therapy and help she received. Janie is now living in permanent housing and is working to rebuild her life.
