Jose fell into homelessness about five years ago after several family members passed away within a short time frame. After his grandmother passed, he began experiencing severe hallucinations that he did not understand, which compounded the grief he was already experiencing. Afraid to tell anyone about what he was going through, he began to withdraw from friends and family. “I went inside my head mentally and emotionally, which led to me becoming homeless,” he shared.
Eventually, Jose was ready to ask for help. With support from the homeless service provider PATH, he moved into safe interim housing, which gave him the foundation to get sober, find employment and begin saving money. In April 2024, with ongoing support from PATH, Jose signed the lease for a permanent home.
Today, Jose is thriving. He volunteers as the on-site maintenance person for his apartment building and as a landscaper. He is a self-proclaimed chef, specializing in tamales, caldo and sushi. Through his Health Net managed care plan, he receives excellent medical and dental care, as well as healthy meals deliveries each month. Jose spends his free time with the many plants he has throughout his apartment and cooking for the family members he has reconnected with since obtaining housing. As of March 2025, Jose is also a proud husband.
